Below you will find answers to questions our clients frequently ask.

What Is Asbestos?

Asbestos, a mineral fiber used as insulation in buildings built in the 1950's, was first advertised as a “miracle product” claiming that it would revolutionize the insulation industry. Research has shown, when asbestos was marketed in the 1920's, the manufacturers hid knowledge that asbestos can flake off and get trapped in the lining of the lungs, causing scarring, and in many instances, asbestos related disease, mesothelioma and cancer.

What are the Sources of Asbestos Exposure?

Asbestos exposure can arise in a variety of trades. Almost any type of construction worker had a chance of asbestos exposure at one time or another, many not even knowing they had been exposed. Plumbers and electricians used asbestos insulation on pipes and wiring. As late as 1980 asbestos was found in common household appliances such as hairdryers. Others exposed to asbestos include firefighters who dealt with asbestos in burning buildings and shipyard workers,   naval veterans or anyone who served on a ship manufactured in the U.S.

How Can Asbestos Harm You?

Asbestos is extremely dangerous when the very thin fibers separate and are inhaled. The fibers which cannot be exhaled get caught in the lining of the lungs and cause irreparable scarring. In many instances, the scarring can be fatal by itself, but can also cause several types of cancers, such as mesothelioma.

The number of deaths from asbestos related diseases has skyrocketed, since the beginning of the 21st century. While it is very important to take care of yourself and see your medical doctor for checkups, regular medical attention is critical if you fall into one of the career categories known for asbestos exposure.
