Seroquel (Quetiapine) is a drug that has been marketed in the treatment of bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. It is manufactured by Astrazeneca. This company claimed it to be a “wonder drug” that had a decreased risk of Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome (NMS), and Tardive Dyskinesia (uncontrollable movements). This was seen as a great improvement from similar drugs that carried a heightened risk. The company claimed on the website that, “although possible side effects can be a concern with any medication.., the potential for bothersome side effects is relatively low for people taking Seroquel” (source: Seroquel.com). But, as listed on the important safety information, this claim is proven false. Seroquel was said to have treated symptoms with more improvement than other such drugs, but recent studies have proven this claim wrong. Patients taking Seroquel may be at an increased risk of potentially deadly NMS and Tardive Dyskinesia than with many other anti-psychotics. Many side effects that are seemingly normal could actually be signs of severe diseases. These side effects may include:
- pain in the upper right abdomen
- sudden drop in blood pressure when standing
- abnormal liver tests
- large weight gain
- NMS
- extremely high or low blood sugar (hyperglycemia / hypoglycemia)
- diabetes
- Tardive Dyskinesia
- Ketoacidosis
- hyperosmolar coma
- seizures
- fainting
- rash
- fever
- very stiff muscles
- excess sweating
- fast or irregular heartbeat
- unusual bleeding or bruising
- loss of appetite
- yellowness of the skin or eyes
- flu-like symptoms
- lack of energy
- pancreatic cancer
Seroquel may also react very seriously with many prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, and nutritional supplements. Many side effects of Seroquel can lead to life-long sickness or death. Seroquel may have also been wrongfully marketed for relief of anxiety, insomnia, major depression, and dementia-related psychosis. Taking this medication for these conditions may potentially increase the risk of dangerous side effects because of the unstudied patient population.
